Helping to Meet America’s Energy Needs
Geothermal energy has the potential of fulfilling up to 20 percent of the U.S. electricity needs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The U.S. geothermal output capacity is 3,500 megawatts. It is believed that currently geothermal energy has an output capacity that is equal to the production capacity of two nuclear or coal-fired power generation plants. In addition to the electricity that is already generated from geothermal energy, additional power can be generated from western states, such as: California, Nevada, Utah and Hawaii.
